NPR’s All Things Considered recently covered a current, high profile story from Connecticut regarding a 16-year-old transgender girl (“Jane Doe”) who–although not “charged with any crimes”–was moved to an adult women’s prison after the state deemed her too violent for a juvenile facility. WNPR All Things Considered Host and Correspondent, Lucy Nalpathanchil, asks: “When States Can’t Control Violent Youth, Is Prison the Answer?” Noting that “Doe” has a long history of physical and sexual abuse and had lived in out-home-placement since age 9, Nalpathanchil interviewed John Tuell, Executive Director of the RFK National Resource Center, on the impact of trauma on a young person and system response to dual status youth.
